Ironing Board Re-cover

Did I use my ironing board as a table - at a tea party - on a ship - in rough seas? One might guess so.

No doubt I've long needed to re-cover it. It's a simple project - you've already got a template - and it's a great way to use up the extra fabric you have that is stressing you out (or is that just me?).

For this project you will need: approx. 2 yards of lovely fabric* *measure your ironing board first to make sure that you won't need more than this

You'll also need these basics Thread Sewing Machine Iron Pins, Safety Pin Scissors Tape Measure Chalk/Marking Pen

This project assumes that you've got an ironing board with a drawstring fabric cover.

READY YOUR TEMPLATE

Remove your existing cover, pull out the cord (drawstring). Keep the cord, we'll re-use it. Iron your old cover flat, this will become your template.

MAKE TEMPLATE / CUT FABRIC

Press the fabric you're going to use for your new cover. Lay it flat on the floor (or large table). Lay your old cover on top of it. Mark on your new fabric the outline of the old cover; then create another outline 1.5" outside of this line (fig a).

You can now say goodbye to your old cover. I'll give you a moment.

Now, cut the fabric along the outside line you've marked.

CREATE DRAWSTRING TUBE

Fold outside edge in so that the crease (fold) is the first line you drew and press the fabric in place. You don't have to be really precise with this so when you get to corners let the fabric pleat as it wants naturally and press in place.

Next, fold the raw edge in towards the outside fold and press. Again, it will be a little tricky at the corners but don't worry about it being too precise and you'll get the hang of it. Pin your hem in place as you go along.

With your sewing machine stitch along the inside edge of your hem through all layers of the fabric.

At the top (most pointed) end of the ironing board - where your drawstring came out in your previous cover -  cut a small hole in the back side of your hem.

FINISH

Tie a knot at one end of your cording and string it onto a safety pin. Insert it through the hole you've snipped and feed it through the hem. Pull it back out the same hole and adjust it enough so that you have the same amount of each end of the string hanging out. Put it back on your ironing board, pull the cord tight, tie it off and you're done!

So fresh and so clean, clean. And for added fun, if you'd like, made a quick pin cushion to match out of scraps!
